The Griffith Swans turned in the type of four-quarter performance they have struggled to produce this season to beat the Wagga Tigers by 11 points at Exies Oval on Saturday.
The Swans prevailed 10.12 (72) to 9.7 (61) to reinvigorate their Riverina Football League campaign after a disappointing loss to Mangpoplah-CUE the previous round.
The home side was well served by forward HenryDelves, the university student returning to Griffith tobootfive goals in his first game for the season.
Kieran Hume and Ben King also starred, but in a blow for the Swans, Michael Griffiths could be facing a stint on the sidelines after suffering a suspected broken arm midway through the first quarter.
Swans assistant coach Tom Groves said his team did well to hold off the Tigers with a player down.
“We had four quarters of footy and they kept coming atus, as we expected,” he said.
“But we just kepton going and came out the victors.
“Everyone had an impact. Everyone played their part, which made a hell of a difference after ‘Griffo’ went down in the firstquarter.
“Everyone sort of had to stand up to cover himfor the game, but everyone played their role.”
The third quarter was key for the Swans, who extended a one-point lead at half-time into a 13-point advantage after keeping the Tigers scoreless. While therewere occasional lapses, Groves believes the Swans are making progress after an inconsistent start to the season.
Griffith are yet to record back-to-back wins this year, but Groves said the club had a big opportunityto change that against Leeton-Whitton next Saturday.
“It reallyhelps we’vegot another homegame next week,” he said.
“It’s a massive chance to get two wins and build that confidence.
“We’vehad some good wins, but we haven’t strung them together yet.”
Also on Saturday, the Swans reserve graders maintained top spot on the ladder with a 16.6 (102) to 4.5 (29) victory.
The under 17s also had a win, 11.12 (78) to 5.4 (34).
